Artist & Provenance
Niels Mandrup Bruun was a Danish painter, draftsman, and graphic artist born in Ribe. He studied at Ribe Cathedral School in 1938 and later became part of the resistance movement during WWII, fleeing to Sweden in 1944 where he lived in Uppsala with painter and sculptor Bror Hjorth. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm under Professor Sven Erixson before returning to Denmark after the war to continue his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under Aksel Jørgensen, Elof Risebye, and Vilhelm Lundstrøm. His style combined expressionism with abstraction, often inspired by motifs from Ribe and its marshland landscapes. Bruun’s works are represented at Ribe Kunstmuseum.
